Tom Jones Puts His Foot In His Mouth With Homophobe Comment

$

0

Tom Jones has put his foot in his mouth once again.

Even though he just released his new album, Long Lost Suitcase, Jones has been getting more press over his release from The Voice U.K., his comments on Engelbert Humperdinck and, now, his statement on his fear of homosexuals in the 60’s.

Jones talked to The Big Issue about his childhood and career but people have been focusing on one particular statement:

I was ready for most aspects of the music industry but when I met the producer Joe Meek, that threw me off a bit. Because he was a homosexual. I thought, wait a minute, is the London scene, the people who run British showbusiness – are there a lot of homosexuals involved here? Because if so, I’m going back to Cardiff. So much so that when I signed with Decca and Peter Sullivan became my manager, and he said the same thing Joe Meek said – tell the boys to pack their gear up, I want to talk to you myself – I said, you’re not one of these queer fellows are you? And he said, what are you on about? I became paranoid, you see. I wondered, was that required to make a hit record? But then I got into it and I realised no, it just so happened that the first guy to record me was a homosexual producer. Once I got over the shock of that, and realised it wasn’t true, most people were normal. Well, I shouldn’t put it like that. Homosexuals are normal, it’s not that they’re not normal. It’s just that they are what they are.

Criticism came fast after the publication of the article. Andrew White of Stonewall Cymru, an LGBT rights group, said “It’s not unusual to meet gay people in show business so we’d have thought that Sir Tom would have learnt how to talk about us by now. Instead he’s still painfully tripping over his words. Here in Wales we call him Jones The Voice, it would be a real shame if he became Jones the voice of the past.”

Twitter also lit up with criticism:

Tom Jones has said gay people aren’t normal. Someone needs to tell him that, in this day and age, It’s Not Unusual to be loved by anyone.

@RealSirTomJones being gay is not “normal”? Are you for real?
It’s 2015

@Independent such a big voice, such a small worldview. Please someone around #TomJones, get him to shut up in public. Please!!!

@RealSirTomJones You silly old fool. Very disappointed.

Engelbert Humperdinck Does An Ed Sheeran Song Live

$

Music legend Engelbert Humperdinck is performing Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ on his current Australian tour and he says he is a big fan of Ed’s.

“This kid is going to be around a long, long time because he is humble,” Engelbert tells Noise11.com. “He is very nice to people. He is not conceited. He has all this talent and now he must have an awful lot of money and he is still a nice guy. I hope he remains that way because I’m a big fan”.

Engelbert puts his own unique style into the Ed Sheeran song. “I hope the audience like my version of his song. It is different,” he says. “I do sing it a little different obviously but he made his mark with it and there are other performers who enjoy doing other people’s material, especially if it’s a great song. I do enjoy singing other people’s material now and then”.

Ed Sheeran is managed by Elton John’s management company and Elton makes a video cameo at the Engelbert show when they perform their duet ‘Something About The Way You Look Tonight’. The two go way back.

Elton is a sweet guy. He is just a lovely man. The funny thing with Elton, we were in the studio for over an hour just talking about old times and how we first met. I met him on a plane from LA on the way to London. He was sitting in front. I was very shy in the early days and wanted to go over and say hello to him. Later I was looking out the window and I felt someone sit on the handle of my chair. It was Elton. ‘Hey how are you?’ he said and it took so much pressure off me. This big man came over to talk to me and I should have gone over to talk to him. I was the shy one. I was so happy that he came over and spoke to me and we have been friends ever since”.

Engelbert Humperdinck is touring Australia for Bluehawk Presents.

REVIEW: Engelbert Humperdinck Plays Melbourne

$

0

They don’t make stars like Engelbert Humperdinck anymore. Once upon a time fame came from talent, not celebrity and Engelbert Humperdinck is one of the greatest talents of the past half a century. To be in the presence of a star like Engelbert Humperdinck is to be in the presence of greatness.

Engelbert Humperdinck performs at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda on Thursday 29 October 2015

Engelbert is a few years shy of the 50th anniversary of his first hit ‘Release Me’ (1967) but over the course of a two-hour show gives the audience a lifetime of memories.

Engelbert Humperdinck performs at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda on Thursday 29 October 2015. Photo by Ros O'Gorman

Engelbert’s hit songs like ‘The Last Waltz’, ‘After The Lovin’, ‘There Goes My Everything’, ‘A Man Without Love’ and ‘Am I That Easy To Forget’ are some of the greatest hits of all time and essential to the show. ‘Release Me’ kept The Beatles ‘Penny Lane’ from going to number one ending a consecutive run of number ones for the Fab Four started in their early days. However, it’s the new songs that give an Engelbert show its 21st century relevance.

Just as he was championed by Dean Martin at the start of his career Engelbert Humperdinck recognises new talent coming through and acknowledges Ed Sheeran as one of the great talents of today who will be around in 50 years from now. Engelbert performs Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ as part of his 2015 show in his own unique style taking the young Sheeran’s work to a whole new audience.

Ed Sheeran is attached to Elton John’s management company and Engelbert also links to his long-time friend Elton with their duet ‘Something About The Way You Tonight’ synched with Elton’s voice for the show. The song was the nucleus of his previous album ‘Engelbert Calling’.

Engelbert’s new album ‘Runaway Country’ is also showcased in the show. For ‘Runaway Country’ Engelbert returns to his country roots. The title track ‘Runaway’ is one of the finest moments in song Engelbert has recorded in years and proudly sits inside the 2015 setlist as a highlight of the show.
The new album ‘Runaway Country’ also features Engelbert interpretations of Boz Scaggs’ stunning ‘Look What You’ve Done To Me’ and Bruce Springsteen’s ‘I’m On Fire’. The Scaggs song sounds tailor-made for Engelbert’s romantic style. He has a lot of fun with the Springsteen song, donning the cowboy hat and attempting to line-dance for the number.

The 2015 Engelbert Humperdinck show is different from the previous tours. There is a funny and well placed Kardashian comment, an hilarious video with Eddie Izzard about how he got his name and historic footage from a Dean Martin Show showing a young Engelbert at the start of his career in what may very well be the first time the world saw him endorsed by a prior legend.

Enjoy Engelbert in 2015. He will be back. As he told me in an interview earlier this week “why would I retire? What else would I do?”

Happy 80th Birthday Engelbert Humperdinck

Engelbert Humperdinck, one of the world’s true music legends, is 80 today. I say this on behalf of me and my family. Happy birthday Enge.

Engelbert Humperdinck was born Arnold Dorsey Madras, India on May 2, 1936. He was actually a late starter to the pop charts. He was 30 when he had his first hit with ‘Release Me’.

1967 was a massive first year for Engelbert Humperdinck. That year he had three hits that went on to become classics with ‘There Goes My Everything’ and ‘The Last Waltz’ along with ‘Release Me’, three songs that he cannot not do today.

By the end of the 60s, Engelbert Humperdinck was one of the biggest stars in the world and even today is constantly touring the planet. At age 80, Engelbert Humperdinck does more shows per year than most rock stars half or even quarter his age his age.

Engelbert Humperdinck and his son Scott Dorsey have become great friends personally and to my wife Ros and to my mother and father. We treasure the times we spend with him. Rarely do you meet someone so genuine, someone so sincere, humble, honest and talented as Engelbert Humperdinck.

It is truly wonderful to sincerely be able to wish the great man a very, very happy 80th birthday.

Love,

The Cashmeres

Engelbert Humperdinck To Share 50 Years Of Hits In New Compilation

$

Fifty years ago today, Engelbert Humperdinck had just finished up a six-week run at the top of the British Singles chart with the song Release Me.

It wasn’t a new song. Release Me had been written in 1949 by Eddie Miller and Robert Yount and hand already had hit versions in the country field by Ray Price, Jimmy Heap and Kitty Wells and in R&B by Little Esther Phillips, but it was the Engelbert version that really put the song into the ears of the general public.

Up until that time, Humperdinck had not had major recording success but, one night in early 1967, Engelbert was asked to fill in for an ill Dickie Valentine on the popular U.K. TV program Sunday Night at the London Palace. He sang Release Me and, within a few weeks, it was at the top of the charts keeping the Beatles’ Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever at number 2.

It was the beginning of a career that would see Humperdinck hit the British top ten a total of eight times and the U.S. top ten twice, including Release Me which peaked at number 4.

On June 2, Decca/UMe will release Engelbert Humperdinck 50: The Legend Continues. The two-CD set contains 36 songs from his years at Decca Records along with two newly recorded songs and a brand new disco remix of Release Me.

Engelbert said “It is wonderful to still be at Decca after all these years! It’s remarkable to think that it’s been 50 years since ‘Release Me’, yet I still feel a thrill when I step in front of the microphone to sing and love seeing the great joy it brings my fans. I’m delighted to have recorded two new songs for the album, which I’m dedicating to my beloved wife Patricia, whose strength and courage is truly extraordinary.”

Scott Dorsey, the son and former manager of Engelbert Humperdinck, caught up with Cat Stevens in Brisbane this week.

Stevens friendship with Engelbert dates to the late 60s when both stars were starting out. The family connection is still strong with Stevens telling his Brisbane fans how Engelbert taught him to drink.

REVIEW: Cat Stevens in Melbourne 2017

Engelbert had previously confirmed to story to Noise11.com.

“We were all on the same bill, Cat Stevens, Jimi Hendrix, The Walkers, myself,” Engelbert told Noise11.com. “Cat came into my dressing room one time and I was having a little taste of something, a little bit of alcohol, and he said ‘can I have one of those’. I said, ‘you are going on stage Cat. Its going to be dangerous’. He used to sing a song where he swung a pistol around. He had this drink and when he went on stage he dropped the pistol on the floor. He couldn’t handle it. I am so proud to have his song on the CD”.

Engelbert Humperdinck and Wife Patricia Are Battling Covid-19

Music legend Engelbert Humperdinck and wife of 56 years Patricia Dorsey are both battling Covid-19.

In a statement Engelbert revealed he and his wife had tested positive to the coronavirus.

“After nearly a year of an abundance of caution and care, Covid has caught up with us and found a way into our home.

“I am positive for the virus, as is my wife, son Jason and two caregivers.

“Now, we must not let a positive result bring a negative mindset, but I must say, I could use your help in this department. We are asking for prayers, good energy, love and support to be sent our way.

“I know I’m usually the one who starts the ball rolling on #tuesdaymuseday but the platform is yours.

“Every night we do prayers at 8pm for my wife. Now, I have to FaceTime from my room. Last night my daughter flew in with cases of photographs to reflect upon and keep us strong through our recovery. Our son Scott was on FaceTime prayers, our son Jason is in a separate room but on the 8pm call to God, and our son Brad, who is always here and checking up, is on call with supplies… ready, willing and able to do anything.

“My biggest “ask” is for my darling wife, Patricia (Popea) She has been through so much and does whatever it takes. She is an unbelievable woman of strength.

“Please also keep our wonderful caregivers in your prayers”.

Engelbert’s son Scott Dorsey tells Noise11.com, “My beautiful parents are always in my prayers but never more so than now. Dad has protected my mum from everything and anything that enters the house – as she has struggled with dementia over the last decade. The house is like a fortress. It just goes to show how conniving and destructive this virus is. Please send prayers and stay safe.

Engelbert and Patricia married in 1964. Their marriage is a true love story and one of the great marriage successes in an industry not known for longevity.

Send Engelbert a message through Facebook here or Twitter here.

Engelbert Humperdinck Asks For Prayers For Wife Patricia

Superstar Engelbert Humperdinck has posted an emotional video asking for prayers for his wife Patricia who is battling Covid.

Engelbert announced on 27 January that both he, Patricia, their son Jason and two caregivers have tested positive to Covid.

In a new video Engelbert pleads, “Covid entered our home and it was pretty destructive. It got to many members of my family including myself and my darling wife. It has been very heartbreaking because she having her condition as it is, it has made it rather impossible for medical stuff to be done to her. It could be done for me. Consequently it has hit her pretty hard and she is not eating and drinking”.

In 2018 Engelbert confirmed that Patricia had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease 10 years earlier and was now under 24 hour care. He has asked fans to pray for Patricia.

https://fb.watch/3rej379Swl/

He posted:

Dear friends,

I can’t afford the time that it may take to sound
and look like a pillar of strength.

I don’t have the right words, but I know I must speak faith.

I have asked so much in the prayer department.

I know in my heart I will be fine, but our hearts are breaking and we are needing a miracle for my darling wife.

Her Alzheimer’s and the blow from covid have left her in need of all the love she ever gave out to come back to her a million-fold.

Our 8pm prayer (West Coast time ) is not just personal, as it goes out to all those who are suffering from the pandemic and other life threatening diseases.

Therefore, my friends, I don’t feel selfish in this ask, as we all must pray for one another.
Thank you so much for all the concern.

If you have stumbled across this page or you follow because my music speaks to your heart, please take a moment and speak in faith for my Popea (Patricia).

I’m painfully aware that so many are not able to be with their loved ones during this Pandemic, so I am beyond grateful that I am able to be with my wife at this time and thank God every day.

Engelbert married Patricia in 1964 three years before his first hit ‘Release Me’.

This is an especially sad story for me to have to write. Engelbert and Patricia’s son Scott Dorsey is a very close friend of mine and I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with Engelbert over the years.

Engelbert married Patricia Healey in 1964, three years before his first hit ‘Release Me’ made him an international star. Their marriage is one of the entertainment industries true love stories. As his career grew so did the love and the couple soon became a family with the addition of three sons, Scott, Jason and Bradley and daughter Louise.

In 2017 the family announced that Patricia has succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease.

On January 27 Engelbert announced that he and Patricia, their son Bradley and two care workers had tested positive to Covid-19. On February 4 Engelbert asked for prayers for his ailing wife.

My sincerest condolences to my friend Engelbert and Scott, and the family. Scott, who lives in Australia, was unable to travel to the United States to be with his mother but was able to have a presence in the room with his mother via video streaming as she passed.

In a statement from the family, Engelbert says:

Dear Friends,

Please forgive the silence, after the unbelievable response to our plea for prayers.

Our family is heartbroken over the loss of my darling wife.

Last night , she slipped softly away, as if by Gods clockwork.

The last rites were given just before our usual prayers at the 8pm hour, by our nephew, Father Paul. It was 4am for him.
We were so grateful to have him gently lead Popea through this last chapter, with a familiar voice and such love.
She was surrounded by our children, Louise, Jason, Brad, with Scott on FaceTime.

Her longtime caregivers lovingly helped make her transition easier on us all.

Her earthly limitations no longer hold her down as she is freely running the glorious gardens of Heaven, reunited with so many loved ones. We prayed as a family, blessed her with the water from Lourdes and off she went… ushered into the arms of Jesus with help from the generous heart filled prayers from all around the world.

I thank those who reached out in what we now know were her final days, and sent energy, love and words of deep connection to a loving God. He will be the ultimate Caregiver of peace and love.

Patricia battle with Alzheimer’s was brave from the very beginning.

She never resisted as we tried to leave no stone unturned.

We love you beyond words, forever and always. It is slipping now into the minutes of a full day without you.

Goodnight my baby.

Dear Friends,

Please forgive the silence, after the unbelievable response to our plea for prayers.
Our family is…
